‘Kazaam’ Director Reflects on Scary Movie’s Brutal Jab
Paul Michael Glaser, director of the 1996 family film Kazaam starring Shaquille O’Neal as a rapping genie, has responded to a sharp joke in the new Scary Movie reboot. In the comedy, a character scoffs at the idea of Shaq playing a genie, calling the film “terrible” and “a disaster.”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Glaser admitted, “I don’t think we executed it as well as we could have.” He acknowledged the film’s flaws but noted the humor in the reference, saying he understands why it became a punchline. Glaser also reflected on the challenges of the production:
- Shaq’s inexperience: The basketball star was still learning to act, which affected the film’s tone.
- Script issues: Glaser felt the story “could have been stronger” and more cohesive.
- Visual effects: The 90s CGI and genie magic sequences “did not age well,” he added.
Despite the criticism, Glaser expressed gratitude that Kazaam remains a cultural touchstone. “It’s a part of pop culture history now,” he said, noting that even negative callbacks keep the film alive. He concluded with a lighthearted shrug: “If you’re going to be roasted, at least it’s by a comedy that millions will see.”
