Disney’s latest live-action remake, Moana, offers exactly what audiences anticipate: a faithful, visually polished retelling that struggles to justify its own existence. The film closely mirrors the 2016 animated original, with the same story, songs, and emotional beats. The most striking sequences, however, are ironically the animated ones—specifically, the character of Maui, whose tattoos and magical fishhook effects are rendered through CGI, making him feel more cartoonish than ever.
While the live-action cast delivers solid performances—particularly newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui—the film lacks the vibrant, hand-drawn magic of the original.
